William L. Allison (1832-1893) took over as an editor and publisher of "The Working Farmer" as early as 1862. The William L. Allison & Co. firm succeeded the publisher James O’Kane in 1869.

In the 1880’s Allison published a number of very popular publisher’s series. This included the Arundel Edition and the American Chandos Classics.

In 1890 Lovell bought the Allison plates and subsequently in 1892 those plates were controlled by the United States Book Company.

In 1896 the new W. L. Allison Co. was chartered with capital of $75,000. The directors were E. M. Taintor, Rudolph Gemsheimer and William A. Allison. Beginning at that time, the new firm published many new series and single volumes. Most of the series for juveniles were published by this new firm.

Donohue Brothers bought the entire stock of sheets and plates of Allison in April, 1900.
