W. H. Appleton, New York

William H. Appleton (1814-1899) was the eldest son of the publisher Daniel Appleton. He joined his father's dry goods' store in 1825 and was in charge of the book department. In 1835 he spent time in Europe making introductions to many of the well known book house heads. In 1838 he was made a partner and the name of the firm was changed to D. Appleton & Co. The founder, Daniel Appleton, died in 1849. William continued to work with the firm until his death.

Why William H. Appleton chose to publish on his own imprint between 1863 and 1866 is unclear. Nonetheless, this firm printed the several juvenile series that are shown below.
