John E. Beardsley, Auburn, New York

James Monroe Alden (1817-1901) founded Alden & Markham in 1846.

Alden & Markham was reorganized into James M. Alden by 1850 and into Alden, Beardsley & Co. (1852-1857) when John E. Beardsley (1811-1865) joined. Also associated with this firm was R. M. Wanzer and David Foote. In fact, the Wanzer, Beardsley & Co. firm operated in Rochester between 1852 and 1855.

John E. Beardsley succeeded Alden, Beardsley & Co. in 1857. It failed shortly thereafter.

These firms only published this one juvenile series.

Alden, Beardsley & Co. published the first editions of this series in 1852. This set was also published by Burnett & Bostwick, S. H. & G. Burnett, Kerr, Doughty & Lapham, John E. Beardsley and Hurd and Houghton. The first editions note Cousin Cicely as the author.
