Wm. Carter & Brother, Boston

William Carter, the son of T. H. Carter, manufactured inks in 1858. Previously he had been in the wholesale paper business. When his brother Edward joined William in 1861, the firm name changed to Wm. Carter & Bro. In 1862 some imprints stated that this firm was the successor to Geo. Phinney. In 1868 another brother John and a cousin John W. Carter joined the company to form Carter Bros. & Co. In 1872 with the firm primarily in the ink business, it divided into two companies: Carter Bros. & Co. and Carter, Dinsmore & Co.
