Francis B. Felt & Co., New York

Charles T. Dillingham moved in 1862 to New York from Boston where he had been an apprentice with Crosby, Nichols & Co. At that time he associated with the publisher Oliver S. Felt. Felt died in 1868 (He leaped from a window in his home.) and a new firm was established by Felt's brother Francis: Felt & Dillingham. The latter firm dissolved in 1870 at which time Dillingham became a member of the newly named house of Lee, Shepard & Dillingham. James W. Tappin, formerly of D. Appleton & Co. joined Felt to form Francis B. Felt & Co. Francis B. Felt & Co. was the successor firm to Felt & Dillingham. In 1872 the Lee, Shepard & Dillingham publishing firm bought the stock of Francis B. Felt.
