Fords, Howard & Hulbert, New York

This firm succeeded J. B. Ford & Co. in 1877. The partners were J. B. and E. L Ford, Mr. J. H. Howard and Mr. G. S. Hulbert. All of the latter members of the new firm were previously affiliated with the J. B. Ford & Co.

The outfit initially was to be a subscription house but as time went on numerous trade books were also published.

By 1907 G. S. Hulbert had his own publishing firm: G. S. Hulbert & Co.

Fords, Howard & Hubert published the first edition of book #1 in 1899. It stated in ads that it was the first volume in the "True Grit Series". This publisher did not publish either #2 or #3.

The first edition of "Secret of Coffin Island” was published by Henry T. Coates & Co. in 1897. It was not part of any series at that time. Jim and Joe and a reprint of Dorsey were published by Henry T. Coates & Co. in 1902 and the three books at that time made up a newly formed True Grit Series.
