J. S. Hammond, Providence

There is evidence so far that this publisher printed one juvenile series: the twelve volume 6.25 Cent Toy Books. Interestingly Geo. P. Daniels, another Providence publisher, printed this series numerous times between 1836 and 1848 but there is no evidence that it did the series in 1841 which was when Hammond published it.

John S. Hammond was active in the publishing world between 1826 and 1865. In 1841 it was at 5 Market Street. Daniels had been at that same address in 1838. How it came to be that this firm published this Daniels' series is unclear. But the books of both company's are identical so the assumption is that Daniels gave permission to Hammond to go ahead with it.

It is not known whether this firm also published other Geo. P. Daniel's chapbook series.
