H. J. Howland, Worcester

Henry Jenkins Howland (1810-1897) apprenticed to a Boston printing firm, True and Greene in 1824. He formed the first Infant Sabbath School Class in Boston in 1830. Howland moved to Worcester in 1831. At that time Henry purchased a half interest in a printing business which he subsequently sold to his brother, S. A. Howland. In 1835 H. J. Howland established his namesake printing firm. H. J. Howland mainly was a printing firm during its life although it published a number of volumes.

Howland was associated with Moses Spooner as Spooner & Howland (a printing firm) between 1839-1841.
Although Henry J. Howland printed numerous chapbook (toy) series for other firms, there is only evidence that it only published one series of books for juveniles.
