D. D. Merrill Co., St. Paul

Daniel D. Merrill (1834-1896) was a native of Michigan and moved to St. Paul in 1855. Initially while in St. Paul he worked for several real estate firms. In 1860 he opened a bookstore and stocked it with books and stationery items. In 1870 he joined E. D. K. Randall to form Merrill, Randall & Co. In 1875 the firm became Merrill, Allen & Co. and the following year the outfit was D. D. Merrill & Co. with H. E. Wedelstaedt as a partner. By 1881 the company was noted as D. D. Merrill. In 1891 D. D. Merrill Co. was incorporated. The outfit was insolvent in 1893. It reorganized in 1894 but no juvenile series were published by the new company.

D. D. Merrill Company printed several juveniles series in 1891 that previously had been published by Robert Carter and Brothers.
