Homer Merriam (1813-), a native of West Brookfield, Massachusetts joined his brother William in 1838 in a printing, bookbinding, and bookselling firm in Greenfield, Mass. The brothers also published a small attractive Bible. In 1842 they moved the business to Troy, New York where they continued the business and added the publication of toy books and globe production.

Ransom B. Moore became a partner in the house in 1845.

Henry B. Nims (1828-1896) was a native of Ware, Massachusetts. He joined Merriam, Moore & Co. as a salesman in 1849. Because of his success in that area, he was made a partner in 1852 and the firm name changed to Merriam, Moore & Co. When Homer Merriam left the outfit in 1858, the house became Moore & Nims. During the war the business expanded significantly. In 1869 Nims bought out the interest of Ransom M. Moore.

Ransom B. Moore (1817-1880) left Troy after being bought out and moved to Romeo, Michigan in 1870 where he established a private bank.

Nims brought in two new partners: Joseph Knight and Henry T. Smith. Smith withdrew in 1886 and Nims & Knight was established.

In 1892 Joseph Knight left the firm and established the Joseph Knight Company. It was a subsidiary of Estes & Lauriat. At that time H. B. Nims joined his son as H. B. Nims & Co. in a retail and stationary business.

Louis Coues Page, a native of Zurich and a graduate of Harvard, bought the Joseph Knight Company in 1896 and named the new outfit L. C. Page & Company. Page had been with Joseph Knight Company since its inception and had previously been employed by Estes & Lauriat. Subsequently Knight joined H. T. Coates & Co. as the manager in charge of the publishing department.
