William J. Reynolds & Co.

The Reynolds' firm published a number of juvenile series. The earliest title page imprint of any Reynolds' book I have seen is 1843. Reynolds incorporated in 1847. This was necessitated by the promotion of Frederick A. Brown from clerk to partner. Reynolds retired and the company was succeeded by Brown, Taggard & Chase in the spring of 1856.

The imprints noted as William J. Reynolds, Wm. J. Reynolds and W. J. Reynolds were used interchangeably and are not helpful in establishing book dates.

The "& Co." on the imprint was noted between 1847 and 1856.

Not much is known about Reynolds himself. He died in 1874.

The series in which the title page shows Reynolds on the imprint but as a secondary publisher are not detailed here but rather on the primary publisher's page. This includes Uncle Toby's Library.
