Rickey, Mallory & Co., Cincinnati

In November, 1856 John J. Rickey, W. L. Mallory and W. A. Webb established Rickey, Mallory & Webb for the purpose of carrying on a bookselling and stationary business. At that time they succeeded H. W. Derby and located themselves at 145 Main Street in Cincinnati. W. A. Webb had previously been the bookkeeper of H. W. Derby.

Mallory had been associated with the book house of Truman and Spofford. He died in 1884 "slowly killed by inhaling the nauseous fumes of the deadly cigarette". From 1876 up to his death he had been in the stationary business with W. A. Webb as Mallory and Webb (successor to Mallory and Stanage).

In January, 1858 Webb left the company and the new firm of Rickey, Mallory & Co. was established. It moved to 73 W. Fourth St. in early 1860.

In 1859 W. A. Webb established a partnership with C. F. Bradley, "Bradley & Webb", as a general stationery, printing and binding business. This new firm succeeded C. F. Bradley & Co. One of the partners of the latter company was H. W. Derby.

In 1861 Robert W. Carroll joined John J. Rickey to establish Rickey & Carroll when Rickey & Mallory dissolved.

In March, 1864 Robert W. Carroll purchased the interest of the retiring John J. Rickey in the firm the firm of Rickey and Carroll. The latter company dissolved and was succeeded by R. W. Carroll & Co. See: 19th Century Juvenile Series - R. W. Carroll & Co.

Of interest is an 1869 report of the arrest of John J. Rickey on charges of renting out houses for the purpose of prostitution. More details are unknown.

Rickey, Mallory & Co. published three series for juveniles:
