James M. Usher, Boston

James Madison Usher (1814-1891) in 1841 published the first Universalist newspaper in the United States. He also published on his namesake imprint between 1846 and 1871. In the early 1850’s Usher published The Gospel Teacher, The Sabbath School Annual and in 1852 he was the first publisher of "The Myrtle", a weekly Universalist publication for juveniles.

Usher was active in politics as a state senator, was the founder of the Massachusetts Total Abstinence Society, and was a presidential elector.
