Virtue & Yorston, New York

Virtue, Yorston & Co. was established in 1863 at the 12 Dey Street Address by James S. Virtue, William A. Virtue and Charles Yorston. It was succeeded by Virtue & Yorston by 1865. It was a successor to G. Virtue & Co. (1842-1851) which was established upon the retirement of R. Martin from R. Martin & Co., founded in 1834. Iterations of the firm were Virtue, Son & Co.(1851-1855), Virtue, Emmins & Roberts (1855-1856), Virtue, Emmins & Co. (1855-1860-), and Virtue & Co. in 1861

Charles Yorston had been associated with G. Virtue of England.

This firm published a number of series earmarked for juvenile readers. These sets/libraries were all published in 1869 and 1870.
Many of the books were included in two series. The 1869 books are mostly described as being small 8 vo. whereas the 1870 titles are all 16 mo.
None of the volumes are dated. Thus it is hard to know if a particular volume is part of the 1869 or the 1870 series or more likely both. This is an especially difficult problem because of the scarcity of these publications.

A number of Virtue & Yorston series are not included in this database because it appears they were for adult readers.
