Richard Worthington (1834-1894) emigrated from England and established a Montreal book publishing firm in 1855. He also had a bookselling store. He moved the business as R. Worthington & Co. to Boston in 1867. In December, 1874 he reorganized in New York City. In 1876 he went through bankruptcy proceedings and subsequently began a newly styled firm, R. Worthington. R. Worthington operated until then end of 1884 at which time the outfit again became insolvent. R. Worthington continued in business for a time to attempt to raise money to pay creditors. By June, 1885 a reorganization established the Worthington Co. In 1889 Worthington Co. bought a number of copyrights and plates from the Thomas R. Knox & Co. publisher. Several sets/series including the Mayne Reid books were subsequently published. Worthington Co. failed in 1893.

R. Worthington and Worthington Co. published a number of series for juveniles.
These firms also imported a number of juveniles from England. Several of the series advertised in Worthington catalogues may have only been sold by Worthington and not published with the Worthington imprint. The series in question note this issue on the series page.

These firms also published a number of publisher's series that included the books from various series. The Franklin Edition and the Harvard edition are easy to identify because the cover notes the series name.
