This series was introduced by A. L. Burt in 1900. The first format was published between 1900 and 1902. The imprint on the title page of these books was A. L. Burt. The second format was published between 1902 and 1912. All books printed in 1902 or later had the A. L. Burt Company imprint.

From 1900-1912 the address of Burt was 52-58 Duane Street. Books published thereafter have the 114-120 East 23rd Street address.

Volume #7 "Lives of the Presidents" had new text as new presidents were elected. Books ending with chapters about McKinley and Taft have been seen.
