Published by Lee and Shepard

Lee and Shepard purchased the plates of this series from Nichols & Hall. It announced the publication of this series in the fall of 1872. It initially noted the books would be 4 to. and cost 50 cents each.

This first editions of the twelve titles were published by Whittemore, Niles and Hall in the 1850's and later volumes were published by its successor Nichols & Hall. In September, 1872 the list just below was advertised. This is the same list as the immediate predecessor publisher, Nichols & Hall advertised in 1870.

The titles in the above list were published in 1873 and 1875. The titles of books #4, 5, 6, and 9 were changed with the 1889 printings. The contents of the books were unchanged.

Format 1
Cloth. Green. Cover embossed decoration. Gilt lettering on the spine. 6.25" x 4.5"
(1873 and 1875 publications)

Format 2.
Cloth. Various colors. Black lettering on the spine and front cover. Decorations with boy holding a stick within a circle on the cover. Illustrated. 6.5" x 4.75".

In the early 1890's Lee and Shepard published several series as "thirty-cent books". I have not seen this format as of yet.

The Twilight Stories were published in this format. The entire 12 book set was sold boxed and individually. The 12 volumes were then divided int two six volume sets. The Twilight Stories and the Old Garret Stories.
