This series was introduced by Crosby, Nichols and Company in about 1856. It came boxed for $5. No ads for the series at any earlier date have been seen. The books were all previously published in non-series formats. Because of their popularity, most of the titles went through numerous printings.

The series was reprinted by Crosby, Nichols, Lee, and Co., Crosby and Nichols and Crosby and Ainsworth.

The formats for all the publishers are all similar with blindstamped covers and gilt spines. The cover embossing changed over the years from the non series first editions to the later reprints. 6.75" x 4.5".

No Crosby, Nichols, Lee and Company editions have been seen.
