This series was introduced by A. L. Burt in 1896. Books published between 1896 and early 1900 note the 97 Reade Street address in the back ads. In 1900 until 1912 the ads note the 52-58 Duane Street address. After 1912 the Burt address in ads was 114-120 East 23rd Street.
The imprint on the title page was A. L. Burt until 1902. In 1902 and later the imprint was A. L. Burt Company. (Beginning with volume #33 and reprints of the earlier titles)

In 1896 there were 25 volumes (#2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14,15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 33)

In 1906 there were 123 titles in this series. By 1908, even with the Alger titles deleted, there were 146 volumes in this set. Of note is that in 1908 the Henty titles were added as the Alger titles left to be part of other Burt series (Joe's Luck Series, Chimney Corner Series and in 1910 the Wide Awake Series). Thereafter the number of titles varied but never went above 146.

Cover pictures of the Rugby Series are shown below. Some covers are pictured in the Burt Catalogues. Some of the cover pictures below are thought to be from the Rugby Series based on various book characteristics. See "Horatio Alger Books Published by A. L. Burt" by Bradford S. Chase for more information.
