These books were previously published by Wm. H. Appleton. The earlier two formats and illustrated title page are identical to the previous 1865 W. H. Appleton volumes. The illustrated Appleton title pages had either four, five or six portraits. The Leavitt books only have five or six portraits. Later Leavitt & Allen Bros. published the six Headley titles in two series: "Monitor Series" and "Fight it out Series".
