A. L. Burt first published this series beginning in 1896. Books published between 1896 and early 1900 note the 97 Reade Street address in any back ads. In 1900 to 1912 the ads note the 52-58 Duane Street address. Beginning in 1912 Burt was at 114-120 East 23rd Street The imprint on the title page was A. L. Burt until 1902. In 1902 and later the imprint was A. L. Burt Company.

Initially each book had five colored plates and numerous illustrations. By 1910 the books had eight colored plates.

In 1917 the series only had fifteen titles.

Cloth. Various colors. Each title has a book specific cover illustration with gilt lettering (Later editions do not have gilt cover lettering.) 8 vo. These titles were published in various formats by Burt. The books in this series note the five (later eight) colored plates on the title page.
