D. Appleton

Daniel Appleton (1785-1849) was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He entered the dry goods business first in Haverhill and later in Boston but finally settled in New York City in 1825. Subsequently he added to the business by selling imported English books with the help of his brother-in-law Jonathan Leavitt. Eventually Leavitt and Appleton parted ways with Appleton giving up the dry goods part of his business and settling on Beekman Street. Appleton's imprint appeared on a book for the first time in 1831. His son William H. Appleton was in charge of the sales department.

In 1838 William became a partner and the firm name changed to D. Appleton & Co. Daniel retired in 1848 and two of William’s brothers, John and Daniel Sidney Appleton joined as partners. In 1865 a fourth brother, George S. Appleton, became a partner.
