Tales for the People and Their Children

Published by D. Appleton and Company

This series is somewhat complicated. It was introduced in 1841 and I have seen editions as late as 1856.
Titles were added and deleted as the years went on. In 1849 a "second series" was added. Many of these titles were also in Appleton's "Common School Library". Subsequently many of the volumes were also in Appleton's "Howitt's Popular Tales".

In the mid-1850's this series was also called "Popular tales"

In 1841 these eight titles made up this series:
Who Shall be the Greatest by Mary Howitt
Sowing and Reaping. By Mrs. Howitt
Strive and Thrive by Mrs. Howitt
Hope On, Hope Ever by Mrs. Howitt
Looking Glass for the Mind by Anonymous
Settlers at Home by Captain. Marryat
Early Friendships by Mrs. Copley
Family Secrets; or, Hints to Those Who Would Make Home Happy by Mrs. Ellis
