The White & Allen publishing firm had a relatively short life. Originally Joel Parker White and Frederick A. Stokes left the employ of Dodd, Mead in May, 1881 and formed White & Stokes. In 1883 Frank Allen, also a former Dodd, Mead & Co. employee joined White and Stokes to establish White, Stokes & Allen.
Of note, Allen's grandfather, Moses Allen, was one of the founders of the American Tract Society.

In May, 1887 White, Stokes & Allen dissolved and White & Allen was formed. The firm went bankrupt in 1890.

Frederick A. Stokes succeeded White, Stokes & Allen in 1887. In the fall of 1887 Frederick’s brother, Horace, joined the firm and it became Frederick A. Stokes & Brother. In 1890 the firm incorporated as Frederick A. Stokes Company.

In 1895 Stokes established a London branch. Thus, if London is noted on the title page, the book dates from 1895 or later.

Although Stokes did not specialize in books for juveniles, it did publish a number of volumes in series formats.
