Introduced as a series by H. McGrath in 1863. Later beginning in 1887 this set was published by Henry McGrath & Sons. The first seven titles were originally published in "Miss Agnew's Popular Tales".

Two formats were produced. The cloth books were sold individually or as a boxed set. The fancy paper format was also sold individually or as a twelve volume package.
