Henry McGrath (1819-1898) was born in Ireland and moved to the United States in 1837. It is unclear when he started his publishing firm but he was in business as early as 1843. In 1850 he was associated with the H. and C. McGrath publishing house. It appears that this latter firm went out of business and Henry McGrath succeeded it in about 1857. In 1887 Henry McGrath's sons, James and Charles were included in the new firm's name, Henry McGrath & Sons.

The publishing house of P. J. Kennedy bought the McGrath catalogue in 1898.

Prior to Henry McGrath’s publication of series for juveniles beginning in 1859, Henry M'Grath and H. & C. McGrath published several series.

Between 1859 and 1886 Henry McGrath introduced a total of ten series for juveniles. Henry McGrath & Sons reprinted all of the earlier ten series beginning in 1887 and introduced one series (#4) in about 1890.

All of the series below were published in two formats: Cloth and fancy paper covers. The books were sold individually or a sets. Cloth in a box and the paper volumes in a package.

The books are rather scarce. The dates of the known editions are noted on the series page. It is likely that there are years not yet seen.
