Roberts Brothers, Boston

Lewis Roberts and his brothers John and Austin were the founders of this firm. It began as a bookbinder in Boston in in the 1850’s and became a photographic album manufacturer in the early 1860's. Thomas Niles joined the company in 1863 and was made a partner in 1872. It was Niles who brought in the authors who generated large sales. This included Louisa May Alcott. Niles died in 1894 and the outfit was sold to Little, Brown & Co. in 1898.

Roberts Brothers published a number of series for juveniles.
