Hurst & Co., New York

Thomas D. Hurst was born in England in 1844. His namesake publishing firm was founded in 1871. Prior to this he worked as an electrotyper. In the early years the firm published a number of "how to " books, reference books and. In the early 1890's Thomas' son, George, operated his own namesake publishing outfit. Hurst died in 1924.

The first publishers’ series Hurst produced was the Arlington Series in the 1880’s. During the 1890’s the Hurst output included numerous reprints, classics, juvenile quarto books as well as series. After the turn of the century, Hurst produced a number of publisher's series as well as many juvenile series.

Only three publisher’s series are included in this bibliography.
The Pearl Library which began in 1899 and was originally called the Epworth Library.
It first was published in 1897. The "Young America Library" was published in 1899 and books were added and deleted to the list until the late teens. Both of these publisher’s libraries contained books exclusively for juveniles. Other sets printed for juveniles were first published after 1900 and are beyond the scope of this bibliography.
