Harper & Brothers, New York

In 1817 J. & J. Harper was established by James and John Harper. Two other brothers, Joseph and Fletcher joined the firm in the mid-1920’s. Joseph purchased a share of the firm in 1823. Fletcher joined the outfit in 1825. The name was changed to Harper & Brothers in 1833.

The firm was prolific and printed several very popular periodicals: Harper’s New Monthly Magazine (1850), Harper’s Weekly (1857), Harper’s Bazar (1867) and Harper’s Young People (1879). Although books for juveniles were not a mainstay of the company (with the exception of Jacob Abbott’s output), it still published a fair number in series and non series formats. The series are shown below.

Between 1825 and 1853 they company was at 82 Cliff Street. This can be helpful in dating some of the earlier books.
